Under Fire – Henri Barbusse – 1916

Originally published as “Le Feu” in French, in 1916, this was one the first novels to appear on the realities of WWI. The date of publication is relevant: the soldiers of the story wonder if this war is ever going to end. Nothing I’ve read about WWI (and in the past two years it’s been a lot) is as crude, graphic, direct and unremitting as this narrative of a battalion through its ordeal battle after battle. It is really a very good novel (except for the preaching, utopian ending), but certainly, as they say, “not for the faint of heart”.
