This is one tough book to read; it demands incredible work from its readers, and even then, one must fight to keep from giving up on it. But the value of the book is that it gets inside the head of a mid-century creative, addicted, paranoid writer who just happens to be brilliant. Yes, it takes a different approach to “understanding” (much as David Foster Wallace’s books do), but if you can hang in there with it, you’ll be well-rewarded.
