The Iliad – Homer – 800-725 B.C

I think it is the best story ever told, and even more so if you read in Greek. It has little to do with the followings epic: it was the first epic ever put into paper, it is somehow a recollection of stories which had been told from father to son for many generations, and, altough its main theme is war, it does not incite us to make war, for it presents us not only the hardships of war but its consequences. And, more often than not, they are as cruel as battles were.
