It was difficult to obtain a patent since the wheel was invented near-simultaneously in three versions, square, oval and round. And, while the square and oval wheels were good enough for carting the mother-in-law around, the round version had stiff competition from the pogo stick for serious methods of personal transport. Anyway, the patents office in Uruk only opened on alternate Wednesday afternoons and was always packed.
